Wiring tips for caravan brake controllers
Be aware that there is no standard wiring for caravan/to vehicle pairing. Not only does it change from caravan manufacture to caravan manufacture it also changes between models and even years built.
If in doubt it pays to open up the trailer plugs and see how they are wired and also look at and additional plugs. 50amp anderson connectors are frequently used. These come in different colours and are “keyed” to only work with like colours.
Trailer brake control wire is generally blue and generally found in pin 5 of a 7 pin/12 pin flat trailer plug.
ESC by ALKO is often found in pin 2 of a 7 pin/12 pin flat trailer plug but in some caravans like Snowy River from Australia there can a red Anderson connector for ESC power and ground.
Breakaway battery charging can often be found in pin 2 in a 7 pin plug (if its not already used for reverse lights or ESC) or pin 8 in a 12 pin plug.
Caravan Fridge often uses pin 8 or pin 9 in a 12 pin plug or can be run through a Anderson plug. Usually grey but not always.
Caravan battery charging. Generally these days with so many caravans having good solar panel set ups, caravan battery charging isn’t all that important. But if required this can often be found run through pins 8 or 9 in a 12 pin trailer plug or via a separate anderson plug. Usually grey but Snowy River use a blue Anderson and some others may even use a red.
I have done both a Snowy River sr19 and New Age Road owl and the wiring is the same.
